Twelve-year-old SATORU is a heart-broken boy who has totally withdrawn following the sudden death of his mother. His father has invented a very advanced remote-controlled robot named HINOKIO which SATORU uses as a tool to communicate with the outside world of this schoolroom from the "safety" of this home. Through the eyes of HINOKIO, the robot, SATORU experiences real life friendships and his first real love but he eventually comes to realize that he must go out into the real world without HINOKIO.
