The film is also presented as part of the “Cinema Italia SF” project, a collaboration between Luce Cinecittà and the Italian Cultural Institute which, after the successful Pasolini and Bertolucci series in 2013 and 2014 respectively, will bring this coming September “De Sica Forever”, a tribute to the great Italian director with four of his most beloved works: Bicycle Thieves, The Gold of Naples, Marriage Italian Style, and The Garden of the Finzi-Contini.
As well as Sophia Loren’s memorable role as the protagonist, La Ciociara also features performances by Jean Paul Belmondo, Eleonora Brown, Carlo Ninchi and Andrea Cecchi. The plot was adapted from a novel of the same name by Alberto Moravia, one of the most highly respected 20th-century Italian authors, and is a fictionalised account of the mass rapes committed by Moroccan troops in the French army after the battle of Monte Cassino in 1944.
