Todd Rohal’s Offbeat Comedy Is Perfect Antidote to the Holiday Season

‘Catechism Cataclysm,’ Todd Rohal’s follow-up to ‘Guatemalan Handshake’ is a genre-busting, hilarious and wonderfully confusing nest of twists and surreal gags. Father Billy—played with classic stoner weirdness by ‘Eastbound and Down’’s Steve Little—is an easily distracted, emotionally frail, heavy metal–loving priest. His sermons consist of retelling urban legends and his theological research appears to focus on YouTube videos. Asked by his troubled senior to take time to consider whether the church is his true calling, Father Billy decides to take a canoe trip with his childhood hero and former metal guitarist Robbie. As they meander down the river the two trade stories about music and life, and Father Billy extols the virtues of the 11th Commandment: Thou shalt rock and roll! This film is the first from Danny McBride, David Gordon Green and Jody Hill’s recently formed production company, Rough House Pictures. With a storyline that is impossible to predict and hysterical performances by Little and Robert Longstreet, this film is best watched with someone you like to laugh with. Written by Todd Rohal. Photographed by Benjamin Kasulke. With Steve Little, Robert Longstreet, Mikki Ann Maddox, Koko Lanham, Rico A. Comic. 81 min. Distributed by IFC Films.

Cult Animator and Persistence of Vision Award Recipient In Person to Introduce His Newest Animated Film, the Final Short of His Trilogy About a Mysterious Man

Cult animator, Academy Award nominee and 2010 Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award recipient Don Hertzfeldt returns to San Francisco for a special evening featuring his newest animated film ‘It’s Such a Beautiful Day.’ This new work completes his trilogy of shorts begun with ‘Everything Will Be OK’ and ‘I Am So Proud of You,’ about a mysterious man named Bill. Nearly two years in the making, ‘It’s Such a Beautiful Day’ blends traditional animation, experimental optical effects, trick photography and new digital hybrids printed out one frame at a time—all photographed on an antique 35mm animation stand, one of the last remaining cameras of its kind in America. The result is a passionate brand of filmmaking that veers without warning from vaudevillian pratfall humor to powerful ruminations on the vagaries of life, love and death. It’s not unusual for Hertzfeldt to single-handedly write, direct, produce, animate, photograph, perform voices, record and mix sound and/or compose music for one of his films, at times requiring years to complete a single short. The animation alone for one of his films often requires tens of thousands of drawings. This special screening of the entire trilogy and other favorites will be followed by an onstage interview. Also playing: ‘Wisdom Teeth’ and ‘Intermission in the Third Dimension.’ Total running time 71 min.

Showtimes: 7:00pm, 9:15 pm

Tickets $11 for SFFS members, $13 general, $12 senior/student/disabled. Box office opens November 7 for SFFS members and November 14 for the general public: online at sffs.org and in person at San Francisco Film Society | New People Cinema.

Documentary Chronicles the Disappearance of Darkness In a Quest to Understand What Is Lost in the Glare of City Lights

‘The City Dark’ (USA 2011), Ian Cheney’s humorous, searching, poetic introduction to the science of darkness plays December 6 at San Francisco Film Society | New People Cinema as part of the Film Society’s new monthly Doc Day programming.

For most urban dwellers, a starry night is often impeded by the bright lights of the big city. Yet throughout history, the stars have inspired some of the greatest poets, philosophers and painters. In ‘The City Dark,’ filmmaker Ian Cheney seeks to discover what we lose when we lose the night. The myriad implications of a planet glittering with artificial lights are explored, from increased health risks to a generation of kids deprived of the wonders of the universe. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, historians and lighting designers, ‘The City Dark’ is a cautionary tale of light pollution and the disappearance of the night sky. Photographed by Ian Cheney, Taylor Gentry. 84 min. Distributed by Argot Pictures.

Showtimes: 3:00, 5:00, 7:00, 9:00 pm.

Tickets $9 for SFFS members, $11 general, $10 senior/student/disabled. Box office open online at sffs.org and in person at San Francisco Film Society | New People Cinema.
