NEW PEOPLE Cinema is a 143-seat underground cinema inside NEW PEOPLE in San Francisco, owned and operated by NEW PEOPLE Inc. The metropolitan city of Stern Bild is home to people from different races and backgrounds, including individuals known as NEXTs who possess superpowers. A few of the NEXTs work as superheroes, sponsored by corporations to protect the city from criminals. Their exploits are broadcast on HERO TV and are popular entertainment among viewers, as much as sports. Wild Tiger (real name Kotetsu T. Kaburagi) is a veteran superhero who has passed his peak. This clumsy but passionate hero is willing to cause destruction to public property for the sake of protecting the lives of his fellow citizens. Under the orders of his new employer, Wild Tiger finds himself teamed up with a highly skilled but cocky rookie hero, Barnaby Brooks Jr. When a giant steel statue suddenly comes to life, the mismatched duo must deal with it. But unable to get in sync, their teamwork fails. Will Kotetsu and Barnaby be able to solve this case? And when the city’s symbol, the Statue of Justice, is stolen, the duo’s relationship remains rocky. The heroes pursue the culprit through the crowd at an amusement park. But this culprit is a NEXT, and no one knows what kind of power he has…

Autumn marks one of the busiest times of the year for film festivals, and the Film Society is doing its part to bring the best films from around the world to the Bay Area. The Fall Season—comprised of a changing roster of small, focused festivals—gives adventurous and inquisitive Bay Area audiences the opportunity to delve deep into carefully chosen film series and engage with bold filmmakers.

Hong Kong Cinema

This beloved showcase highlights one of the world’s major filmmaking hubs and features recent films showcasing Hong Kong’s range of cinematic storytelling with works by both internationally known filmmakers as well as up-and-coming talents. The second edition of the Film Society’s Hong Kong Cinema festival delivers the highest quality new work for a variety of tastes. This year’s program also includes an exciting three-film retrospective to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
