Marius Watz: Automatic Writing
Presented by San Francisco Film Society

As part of its KinoTek series, the Film Society presents the work of pioneering software artist Marius Watz. Working at the forefront of emergent media practice, Watz uses digital processes and authored algorithms to “automatically” produce numerous types of media including video, still imagery and sculpture through semi-autonomous software systems. The resulting abstractions, with their hard-edged geometry and vivid colors, are stunning both visually and conceptually. It’s an artistic practice that merges the processes of production with the resulting work and calls into question the shifting boundaries of what we call art. Watz, a native of Norway, is a lecturer in interaction design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. He is represented by the gallery [DAM]Berlin.

3-D printed sculptures from the artist’s recent MakerBot residency in New York and the video Electro Plastique #1, a time-based visual homage to the Op artist Victor Vasarely.

Watz will speak about his working concepts and methods, followed by a Q&A.

MASTER CLASS WEDNESDAY, JULY 27
Creative Code: Introduction to Generative Systems with Processing
7:00 pm, $15 SFFS members / $20 general
Watz will introduce the conceptual and practical principles of generative systems and creative coding practices using the popular open source tool Processing.

ESSAY THURSDAY, JULY 21
Science fiction writer, Net critic and cyberspace theorist Bruce Sterling will publish an essay on sf360.org about Marius Watz and the emergence of parametric art.

The San Francisco Film Society’s KinoTek programming stream presents nontraditional, cross-platform and emergent media. Eight KinoTek programs will be presented throughout 2011 and 2012, each featuring the work of an artist or practice that challenges the boundaries of screen-based art.
