Week of Feb. 20 – 26 at SF Film Society | NEW PEOPLE Cinema!
at SFFS | NP Cinema
This Week at SF Film Society | NEW PEOPLE Cinema is the continuation of “Margaret” followed by “Roadie”.
( Directed by Kenneth Lonergan )
Through February 23
Showtime: 2:00, 5:30, 8:30pm
2011’s critical cause celebre returns to San Francisco. A discursive examination of moral compasses, it’s the story of a verbally expressive Upper West Side teen named Lisa Cohen (memorably played by Anna Paquin) and her feelings of guilt over a bus accident she is involved in. Using Lisa as the film’s prime mover, director Kenneth Lonergan (‘You Can Count on Me’) develops a panoptic view of the situation, using a wide variety of characters to riff on post-9/11 sensibilities, anti-Semitism, the legal system, sexuality, opera, poetry, literature, and more. Chosen by many critics as one of their favorite films of the year but released in only a few cities, ‘Margaret’ was the focus of a widely signed petition asking the distributor to make the film available to critics groups for awards voting. The Film Society is delighted to welcome this remarkable work back to town. More info >>
( Directed by Michael Cuesta )
February 24 – 29
Showtime: 2:30, 5:00, 7:00, 9:15pm
In Michael Cuesta’s moving character study, middle-aged Jimmy Testagross heads home to Queens after being fired from his roadie job with Blue Öyster Cult. Having lived a nomadic life on tour for most of the past 26 years has rendered him ill-equipped to deal with his present circumstances – his lonely, aging mother; his over-inquisitive friends from the past; or his own diminished future. With great performances by Ron Eldard as the over-the-hill title character, Bobby Cannavale as a boorish high-school acquaintance, and Lois Smith as his addled but hyper-critical mom, Roadie also features a nifty soundtrack featuring Bob Dylan, The Ramones, and several BÖC classics.
